Piper Gunderson Preparation of Copper Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to prepare copper through a single replacement reaction of cupric sulfate with iron. CuSO 4 +Fe FeSO 4 + Cu Materials: Balance Bunsen burner Iron Source (6d nail) Ring stand hardware 0.5g CuSO 4 Water 250ml beaker (pre-weighed) Crucible (pre-weighed) Procedure: 1. Obtain .5g CuSO 4 and place it into a 250 ml beaker. 2. Place nail in the beaker 3. Add enough water to cover the nail; then dissolve the CuSO 4 4. Place the mixture in a safe place and allow it to react overnight 5. Resume the experiment by decanting the liquid from the beaker, this portion is the FeSO 4 6. Weigh the crucible and carefully remove the nail which is now coated with the newly formed copper. Scrape the copper from the nail into the crucible. The nail is excess iron remaining. 7. Heat the crucible gently until the copper is dry. When it is dry it will turn a light brown color. 8.
