Piper Gunderson Preparation of Cupric Oxide Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to prepare cupric oxide through a composition reaction of copper with oxygen. 2Cu + O 2 2CuO Materials: balance 2g powdered copper 1- crucible with holder tongs Bunsen burner Ring stand hardware Procedure: 1. Pre-weigh the crucible 2. Add the copper to the crucible and weight to determine the total mass of the copper and the crucible. 3. Heat the crucible for 1 minute and observe if there has been a reaction. 4. Continue heating for 10 minutes, allow to cool and weigh. 5. Continue heating for another 10 minutes, allow to cool and weigh again. 6. Ensure all the copper is gone, if not then heat until it appears to have all disappeared.
