Biology 310 Third Midterm Examination Spring 2007 Name: [Print]_________Key________________ Name:[Signature]____________________ Student number___________________________ Instructions: Write in INK. Examinations written in pencil or erasable ink will not be read and a failing grade will be assigned. DO NOT USE DIAGRAMS FOR ANY ANSWER. The value of each question is shown in parentheses. If your handwriting is poor, PRINT your answers. Illegible answers will not be read and will be given a score of ZERO . Use the back of the pages to write or print your answers if you do not have enough room on the front of the exam. THINK before you write. Make your answers concise and correc t. Ask yourself what the question is really asking. Take your time. We will use the entire 21/2 hours for the exam, even though it has been written as a 60 minute exam. You will note that we are suggesting limits on the amount of writing needed for many answers. This is to prevent excess verbosity. Some students feel if they write everything they can think of for a question we will find some piece of the answer buried in there. We discourage such a practice. _____________________________________________ 1. A culture of cells grown from the red-crested wombat were found to have undergone extensive DNA damage and had a mutation of Mdm-2. a. What is the function of Mdm-2? [1] Mdm-2 is a ubiquitin ligase which binds P53 and facilitates its degradation in the proteosome b. Will P53 be activated or inactivated? _______ activated________ [1] c. Will the cells be driven toward apoptosis? [ YES or NO ] ___ Yes____ [1] d. Will cytochrome c be released into the cytoplasm? [ Yes or No ] __ Yes___- [1] e. What characteristic of cytochrome c makes it readily released into the cytoplasm. [2] [One sentence] It is a peripheral protein between the inner & outer mitochondrial membranes. f. What two functions does P53 play in apoptosis? [2] 1. _______ Activates transcription of pro-apoptosis genes_______ 2. ______ Goes to mitochondria and binds/blocks anti-apoptosis Bcl-2 proteins ______ -1-

2. Two cell biologists were working on a cure for breast cancer. They noted that there are estrogen receptors in the cytoplasm and on the mitochondrial surface. Estrogen can promote cell division in mammary tumors and induce the activation of carbonic dismutase. They decided to induce the formation of reactive oxygen species [ROS] in the mitochondria as a means of killing tumor cells. a. What is the effect of ROS on tumor cells? [1] [One sentence] ROS can promote apoptosis of tumor cells. Or: ROS can aid in transferring BAX to mitochondria promoting apoptosis. b. What effect does estrogen have on ROS [1] [One sentence] Estrogen can inhibit ROS production by activating superoxide dismutase. c. Would the induction of ROS kill the mammary tumor cells? [ Yes or No ] __ NO__ [1] d. Why or Why not? [One-two sentences] [1] Mammary tumors would not be killed because estrogen would prevent ROS production. 3. Cells under stress [i.e DNA damage] must balance between necrosis and apoptosis.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
