To fully control a man, dictators must not enslave the body, but also destroy the mind. I. Introduction a. Ayn Rand, the author of Anthem , is a Russian-born author and philosopher who is anti-collective. i. Collectivism is the concept of government or society where everyone is worked as one group and there is no singularity. ii. Objectivism is Rand’s philosophy, and it basically states that one should take care of themselves first and that everything revolves around you and your needs. b. In the novel, Equality, the main character, is trapped within an anti- utopian society in which everyone is “equal” and must work as a single unit. i. In this society, Equality realizes that everything is wrong and eventually runs off to find out individualism. c. Thesis: Three important concepts compel Equality’s effort: the realization that this society has taken over and corrupted the people’s minds, the realization that he should not live for others, and the realization that his eccentricity was the best way to live. II.
