The U.S. Constitution - Consists of 7,500 words; 27 amendments - 1789 European Colonial Settlements around 1650 o Each had consisted of different groups of ppl, for different reasons, w/ different notions about politics and gov. o Colonies governed themselves and made own decisions o Were economically successful o No taxation without representation was based on colonial experience 1775, 13 colonies prior to Independence o Occupied much but not all of territories associated with successor state Unitary System o In place today in Great Britain Confederal System Articles of Confederation o Newly independent states needed to adopt some collective governmental mechanism. o Written in 1777 and ratified in 1781 Gov under the A.O.C o Legislature: Unicameral: called Congress Members: between 2 and 7 per state Voting: 1 vote per state o Executive No executive
