ITL LAB 4 - PAGE 3 SPRING 2001 Prelab 4 1. In this Lab you will work with Cisco 7000 routers. Go to Cisco’s web page (www.cisco.com) and find out about the types and number of interfaces of Cisco 7000 router. Provide a brief description of the available interfaces. 2. The Cisco routers in the VINTLab are running the IOS Version 11.2 operating system. Read about IOS 11.2 at http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios112/index.htm Use the web page to answer the following questions: 2.1. What are the routing protocols supported in IOS 11.2. 2.2. Briefly describe how the online help feature of the IOS 11.2 user interface works. 2.3. What is the command which disables IP forwarding at the Cisco router? 2.4. What is the command to change the MTU (maximum transmission unit) on a Cisco router? 3. We will be using a UNIX utility called kermit in the lab to connect the PCs to the Cisco routers. In at most three sentences, describe what kermit is. List at least four major features of the kermit program. Use the Kermit webpage at http://www.columbia.edu/kermit to find information. 4. What is the difference between a null-modem cable (also called cross-over or roll-over cable) and a straight through serial cable? How does one differentiate between the two? Cisco’s web site has a wealth of information at: http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/701/ Visit the following web site for further explanation at : http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/term.html 5. Go to the website http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios112/11 2cg_cr/1cbook/1cintrfc.htm and read about network interfaces available for the Cisco 7000 routers. Answer the following question. What is the command to begin configuring a HSSI interface (High Speed Serial Interface) on a Cisco 7000 router. Assume the interface is in port 1 of slot 0. Deliverables: Answer all problems and turn the answers in at the beginning of the lab.

ITL LAB 4 - PAGE 4 SPRING 2001 Lab 4 In this lab you will configure a Cisco 7000 series router. You will access the routers via their console ports. The terminal emulation software Kermit on the PCs will be used to access the console ports of a router from the PCs. Study the topology in Figure 1. vintpc1 vintpc2 vintpc3 HSSI or FSI or FDDI itl-7000-1 itl-7000-2 itl-7000-3 HSSI or FSI or FDDI Figure 1: Network Topology with Routers. Note : In this lab, since only three Cisco 7000 routers are involved, you need to work in groups of four, or you need to break the group up and work in two “shifts”. Setup for Lab 4 Each machine is connected to a dedicated router through a serial cable.
