The objective of this course is to develop an understanding of the decisions facing financial managers based on corporate finance theory. The course combines lectures and corporate finance cases with articles from practitioner-oriented academic journals. The lectures and case analyses will develop a practical application of many of the corporate finance topics introduced in the core finance courses. The course will focus on topics such as the cost of capital, valuation, capital budgeting, capital structure and payout policy, mergers and acquisitions, risk management, and real options. The course covers a number of general themes in corporate finance, including managerial objectives, managerial incentives, agency issues, corporate governance and value creation. LECTURES: Section 01 TR 11:30 a.m. – 12:50 p.m. HH1104 Section 02 TR 1:00 p.m. – 2:20 p.m. HH1104 PREREQUISITE: AFM 372/ACTSC 391 or ACTSC 372 Accounting and Financial Management, Actuarial Science, Math/CA Finance option or Math/Business Finance Option students only. ANTIREQUISITE: AFM 471 REQUIRED BOOKS AND MATERIALS: A course readings package available from the bookstore, which contains the required cases. 2 AFM 476/ACTSC 471 - FALL 2011 The finance text used in AFM272/372 (Stephen A. Ross, Randolph W. Westerfield, Jeffrey F. Jaffe, and Gordon S. Roberts, Corporate Finance , Fifth Canadian Edition, McGraw-Hill Ryerson Limited, 2008) can serve as supplemental/review readings for most of the topics covered in the course. In addition, some supplemental readings will be suggested as the course progresses. The supplemental readings are optional. The specific material for each class is listed below. For most classes, lecture slides and case discussion questions relating to the material will be posted on the course web site, a week in advance. These should serve to aid student preparation. Practice problems will also be posted as the course progresses (students should monitor the course web page for additions). The course web site also has links to other sites for financial information.
