Chemistry Outreach Demonstrations I) Properties of Gases Liquid Nitrogen (N 2 ) Balloon Experiment -Cool balloons containing the following gases: Air (79% N 2 , 21% O 2 ), N 2 , He N 2 : b.p. ~ -192 C O 2 : b.p. ~ -185 C He: b.p. = N/A (low molecular weight - always in gas phase) -Balloons will contract based on Charles’ Law ( T α V ) -temperature decreases Æ volume decreases -air balloon contains condensed oxygen, small amount of water (BP N2 < BP O2 < BP H2O ) -N 2 and He balloons will show no condensate (cannot achieve boiling points) -He balloon will not contract as much (light gas, low density, stable gas phase) -Allow balloons to return to room temperature -He balloon inflates faster than N 2 and Air balloon (He is lighter gas and larger molar volume) Dry Ice (CO 2 ) Sublimation Experiment -fill beaker with tap water; add drops of food coloring -add a chunk of dry ice to colored solution; solution will bubble until all of the dry ice has sublimed facts: dry ice sublimes at -78 C, CO
