(20 points) A cylindrical pressure vessel of radius R and thickness t carries an internal pressure p and, in addition to that , an independent axial load F . You are asked to find the stresses that develop in the walls of the vessel, by performing two suitable cuts as we did in class (you can assume the vessel is thin enough to be under plane stress). Follow these steps: a) Populate the stress element oriented along the axial-hoop directions, as in the figure. State which stresses, if any, are zero, and why. b) Draw suitable free body diagrams and calculate the stresses. Your grade in this problem will depend on the clarity of these diagrams and of the resulting equilibrium calculations – so make sure that your work is 1) readable and 2) meaningful. c) Check that the units of the stresses you found are correct.
