April 15, 2011 The Vietnam War North Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh - is being supplied by china, South Vietnam: Ngo Ding Diem - Diem seems hopeless, losing popularity, using brutal forces to put down uprisings, monk sets himself on fire to protest diem rule, Kennedy allows a kue to get diem out of power, diem is assassinated, National Liberation Front (NLF, or "Viet Cong") - causes south vietnam to go into a civil war, NLF is in south vietnam and want to unite vietnam, ho chi minh supporters, Lyndon Johnson's War - Kennedy is assassinated and Johnson inherts this war, lbj is more about domestic policy unlike kennedy was, lbj doesn't want the war to take away from his great society, Gulf of Tonkin Resolution (1964) - near unnammious vote, gives johnson power to do anything in vietnam he seems fit, not declaring war, haven't declared war since WWII, Rolling Thunder (1965) - bombing campaing against north vietnam and the nlf in south vietnam, Johnson down plays the significanse of the bombing to the american people
