PRELAB 1 BASIC CONCEPTS MECHATRONICS LAB EQUIPMENT BASICS INTRODUCTION TO LABVIEW AND MULTISIM 1. OBJECTIVES ± Define the basic concepts involved in the theory of electrical circuits. ± Understand the basic theory of real instruments and learn how to operate them. ± Learn the basic functions of Labview and Multisim software packages. 2. NOTATIONS C : Capacitance (Farads) I : Electrical current (amperes) Q : Electrical charge (Coulombs) R : Resistance (Ohms) V : Voltage (Volts) L : Inductance (Henries) T : Time (seconds) 3. BASIC CONCEPTS Voltage: Energy per unit charge created by charge separation. The SI unit of voltage is Volts. Current: Rate of charge flow. The SI unit of current is ampere. Alternating current (AC): Current signal that varies with respect to time. In this case the electrons actually travel in one direction trough the wire and then in the other direction. Number of repetitions of a signal in one unit of time. When the unit of time is seconds, the frequency unit is Hertz. Period: Time required for a wave to complete one cycle, is the inverse of the frequency. RMS value: The RMS value is a way to express an AC current or voltage.
