The picture below shows the planform ofa Grumman F—l4 “Tomcat” naval fighter aircraft. It has a variable geometry in that the wings can be extended or swept back (the dotted lines on the drawing). With wings extended, the airplane has a top speed of 400 miles per hour. Assume that the aircraft is flying straight and level at top speed at an altitude of 10,000 feet with wings extended and that its total weight is 60,000 lbs. The pilot decides to sweep the wings. How fast does the airplane fly ifthe pilot wants to maintain his altitude? Assume that the wing thickness is 1.5 feet and use the drawing below to estimate the aspect ratios of the extended and the swept back wings. (10) i ' g . l l l l l i. A Boeing 747—20013 cargo aircraft based in Seattle is sent to deliver a load of cargo to LaGuardia Airport in New York which is about 4800 kilometers away and then return to the Sea—Tac Airport. The dry mass of the aircraft is 168,000 kgm. and it can carry a payload of 101,000 kgm. The total mass ofthe aircraft fully loaded with fuel is 378,000 kgm. The difference between the total mass of the aircraft and the sum of the dry mass plus the cargo mass is the mass ofthe fuel the aircraft can carry when the fuel tank is full. The lift to drag ratio ofthe aircraft is 20 and the value of the constant in the Breguet equation is k/eg = 1000 km. a.) Can the airplane make the trip to New York without stopping to refiiel ifthe fuel tank is full at the start of the trip? (5) b.) If so, how much fuel is left in the tank upon arriving at LaGuardia.
