ASE 362K Problem Set #8 Clemens / Fall 2010 Due: Wednesday, April 21 Problem 1. (from a previous exam) A two-throat wind tunnel has the area ratios as shown in the figure. The tunnel has fixed stagnation pressure and variable back pressure. The tunnel was designed incorrectly and was unable to start. The back pressure was decreased until the point that shocks formed at both diverging sections as shown. The first shock is at a location where A s1 /A t1 =2, and the second shock is at a location where A s2 /A t2 =2. The exit area of the diffuser is A d = 4A t1 . Assume the pressure at the exit of the diffuser is equal to the back pressure. (i) Show that the tunnel does not meet the starting condition (ii) Determine the back pressure Problem 2. In the converging-diverging nozzle shown below, the design Mach number of the nozzle is 2.6. The plenum pressure is 5 atm. If a normal shock sits at a location where the area ratio A s /A t = 2.2 then determine the pressure at the exit of the nozzle. Problem 3.
