Homework Set #2: Due date: 09/16/10 by 12:00 pm Problem #1: A thin plate of 30x60x0.1 cm 3 size is falling vertically in a narrow slit as shown in Fig 1. The plate thickness is assumed to be negligible as compared to the slit width of 1.5 cm. The slit is filled with a 50-cp oil. Determine the density of plate material required to set the plate in motion at a constant velocity of 0.4 m/s. Oil density is 0.8 g/ml. 1 cm Slit 1.5 cm Problem #2: Obtain the general stress tensor at a given point in flow of an incompressible fluid in a converging channel.

Problem #3 : The rheological properties of a particular suspension used in hydraulic fracturing can be approximated reasonably well by either a “power law” or a “Bingham plastic” model over the shear rate range of 1 to 30 s -1 . If the consistency index K is 7 Ns n /m 2 and the flow behavior index n is 0.35 in the power law model, what will be the approximate values of the yield stress and of the plastic viscosity in the Bingham plastic model? Problem #4: The functional relationship between stress and shear rate of a drilling fluid is experimentally

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
