Procedure For the first step, a new file was created in the data acquisition system. Following, the THERMOCOUPLE and DYNAMOMETER toggles were selected in the program. Before the first cut, a list of parameters was specified in the PARAMETERS menu as followed: WORK MATERIAL: 4340 TOOL MATERIAL: CARBIDE TOOL GEOMETRY NOSE RADIUS: 0.031 (inches) END CUTTING EDGE ANGLE: 10 (degrees) SIDE RAKE ANGLE: -5 SIDE CUTTING EDGE ANGLE: 0 BACK RAKE ANGLE: -5 SIDE RELIEF ANGLE: 5 END RELIEF ANGLE (CLEARANCE): 5 CUTTING CONDITIONS SURFACE FEED RATE (surface feed/min) (checked table per cut)* FEED (inches/rev) (checked table per cut)* DEPTH OF CUT (inches) (checked table per cut)* COOLANT (checked table per cut)* Once the parameters were specified, RUN was selected and the NUMBER OF READINGS DESIRED was set to “100.” Following the entry, the SCALE VALUES were set for amplifier gain.
