Viewpoint #1 America is mainly composed of white Anglo-Saxon people. Sympathized with Know-Nothing Party Viewpoint #2 Irish: Refugees from Ireland due to disaster, specifically the potato famine. Terrible conditions. Called “The Great Hunger”. Problem minority. Irish were targeted due to their religion. In 1840’s anti-Catholicism was spreading throughout the country. Irish compared to Chinese. German: Political refugees rather than disaster victims. Germans were generally professionals and scholars with some capital. Pooled money to buy cheap Western land, started cities. Model minority. Tons of derogatory names: 1. Canucks 2. Swedish Fiddle- double saw 3. Cousin Jacks – Welsh and Cornish Know-Nothing Movement – Very nativist anti-immigration movement that wanted to restrict immigration. Abraham Lincoln – “How could I be? How can any one who abhors the oppression of negroes, be in favor or degrading classes of white people? Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we began by declaring that "all men are created equal." We now practically read it "all men are created equal, except negroes" When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read "all men are created equal, except
