09/16/2011 The German Question I. Introduction- Solomon’s Nightmare Most important part of the Cold War: division of Germany. Germany= the prize,  also in Europe crucial for the economy 1. The heart of Europe. Germany essential for the stability of Europe Metaphor of the German question: Solomon’s nightmare 1. Solomon=wise king of the Jews and to solve an important issue promoted  idea of cutting the child in half to split between the two mothers 2. Both side, East and West, say to “cut it in half”, because neither wanted to  see Germany totally in the hand of the other. Unequally, they all decide at  once and claim they’ve divided it. However, throughout the Cold War,  they blame the division on each other; no unification.      II. War-time decisions and post-war intentions 23 April 1945: Meeting on the Elbe at Torgay  1.
