Permian Extinction a) Claimed 96% of marine animal species and 8/27 Orders of insects b) Thought to have been caused by enormous volcanic eruptions ii. Cretaceous Extinction a) Thought to have been caused by impact of a large meteor II. Animals: Introduction A. Characteristics i. Multi-cellular ii. No cell walls iii. Heterotrophic iv. Goes through aerobic respiration v. Has a motile life cycle vi. Has nervous/muscle tissues B. Structure i. Entire structure is known as the body plan ii. Blastopore forms as a cavity in the young embryo a) If the mouth comes first, it's a protostome b) If the anus comes first, it's a deuterostome iii. Organization a) Cells → Tissue → Organ → Organization b) Tissue types Epithelial – Protective coverings, lines internal organs Cells placed close together acting as a barrier Connective – Structure support, energy storage, etc Tendons, ligaments, cartilage, bones, adipose (fat) tissue, and blood Muscle – Movement of body parts and/or internal organs
