Daniel McAree REL 306 3/22/11 Naskapi Paper 1. In Western culture people refer to a person’s spirituality or ‘religiousness’ by saying that he or she “worships God.” Just “believing in God” whether worshipping God or not already makes one “a religious person” to some degree, even if one is “not very devout.” According to Speck, a large part of the spirituality of a traditional Naskapi individual has/had to do with their carrying out “mentoci’win”, that is to carry out a “practice based on mentu” or even “to operate mentu.” Well, what is ‘mentu’ and why is it so hard to translate? Why do you think Speck chose ‘mentu’ as the first concept to address in starting out his discussion of Naskapi Religion? How did your understanding of this concept change and grow as you moved through the book? Illustrate what you think it means for a Naskapi to “mentoci’win” (operate or act on mentu) and indicate how this is learned. Give your view on how mentoci’win for Naskapi and “worshipping God” for Western peoples differ from or resemble each other. See notes above and lecture as well. Give examples on both sides. In Frank G. Speck’s Naskapi , two things that are requirements for existence are to work and to operate mentu, a native term which is hard to fully grasp its concept, but which represents our spiritual nature that has great force. This means that the Naskapi believe a spiritual factor in your life is just as important as physical work in life, thus seeming like religious beliefs. In the
