Chapter 1: Elements of Music Pitch, dynamics tone color, and duration are the basic elements of music. Pitch is the melody and harmony of music. Dynamics is the degree of softness or loudness. Tone color is how one instrument or voice sound different than another. Pitch is the highness or lowness of a tone. Frequency is how much vibration per second the sound travels. When the pitch is higher, the vibration is faster. When the pitch is lower, the vibration is slower. The tone is the sound that has defined pitch. Regular vibrations reach the ear in equal time intervals. Irregular vibrations without regular intervals is called noise. Intervals is the dstance between 2 tones. Range is the difference between the highest and lowest note. Dynamics is the degree of loudness or softness in music. Dynamics is traditionally given in the musical score by using Italian words. Soft- piano, pianissimo. Moderately- mezzo, Mp (moderately soft), MF (moderately loud). Loud- forte, fortissimo. There is also crescendo which means getting louder and decrescendo which means getting softer.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
