The Resurgence of Conservatism 1980-1992 I. The Resurgence of Conservatism A. The average American was older and more likely to live in the South or West B. The “New Right” emerged out of the countercultural protests of the 1960s and esp. Roe v. Wade (1973). It was led by evangelical Christians – The Moral Majority and Jerry Falwell. C. The Election of 1980 1. Republicans go with former actor and governor of CA – the 69 year old Ronald Reagan . . . Championing the “Common Man” against big government, he sought capitalism without gvoernment restraints, a harsh anti-Soviet policy . . . etc. 2. The Dems . . . An “ABC” candidate . . . Sen. Edward Kennedy fought Carter, but the Pres. Eventually won the nomination. 3. The Results – 489-49 –Reagan won big! D. On his Inauguration Day, the hostages were released in Iran after 444 days of captivity. II. The Reagan Revolution – New Federalism A. “Government is not the solution to our problem; Government is the problem.” Thus he wanted smaller government, less bureacracy, and freer markets.
