Wild type phenotype gets a + superscript (b + b + ) Mutant phenotype gets a lowercase letter regardless whether it is dominant or recessive (bb) Fly genetics The letter often refers to the mutant phenotype b for black, b + for grey, which is wild type vg for vestigal wings & vg + for normal wings w for white eyes, w + for red/wild type eyes Note for this one we will use a different notation since it is sex-linked (on the X chromosome) and using Morgans notation is confusing for first year students.
