Photosynthesis Instructor will blend 60 g of frozen spinach leaves in 100ml water containing .2 g of MgO powder to homogenize Pour all into a 500ml beaker add 150 ml of acetone, cover with watch glass or foil and stir for 10 to 15 min. Instructor will add 50 ml of filtrate to a separatory funnel, then add 50 ml of petroleum ether and 25 ml of 10% NaCl Chlorophyll will be extracted from the filtrate as the mixture is shaken, cap and invert the separatory funnel, open the stopcock to vent the system Close stopcock and shake vigorously Place funnel on a ring stand, it will allow the two solvent systems to separate (may take 15 or more minutes) Drain the lower water-acetone layer into a chemical waste bottle, add 30 ml of 80% methanol to the flask and 15 ml of 10% NaCl Shake mixture and allow to separate Lower aqueous methanol layer containing orange-yellow pigments will be drained and discarded Add another 30 ml of 10% NaCl to the chlorophyll exract and shake again removing
