Chapter three book notes Action potential- a very brief shift in a neurons electrical charge that travels along an axon Absolute refractory period- the minimum length of time after an action potential during which another action potential cannot happen Synaptic cleft- microscopic gap between the terminal button of one neuron and the cell membrane of another Neurotransmitters- chemicals that transmit information from one neuron to another Most chemicals are stored in small sacs called synaptic vesicles Presynaptic cell where chemicals are released Postsynaptic cell where chemicals are taken in Postsynaptic potential (psp)- a voltage change at receptor site on post synaptic cell membrane Excitatory PSP- positive voltage shift that increases the likelihood that the postsynaptic neuron will fire action potentials Inhibitory PSP- negative voltage shift that decreases the likelihood that the postsynaptic neuron will fire action potentials Reuptake- a process in which neurotransmitters are sponged up from the synaptic cleft by the presynaptic membrane (recycle) Neurotransmitters Acetylcholine o Motor neurons and voluntary muscles attention, arousal, and memory o Lack of causes alzheimers disease Monoamines o Dopamine (drug used to treat parkinsonsism is converted to dopamine in the brain to compensate for diminished dopamine activity)

o Norepinephrine o Serotonin GABA and Glutamine Gamma-aminobutyric acid produces inhibitory post synaptic potentials GABA has inhibitory effects at almost all synapses, GABA receptors are widely distributed in the brain and may be present at 40% of all synapses Is involved in regulation of anexiety in humans
