The topic that I chose to do research on was deviance. This research consisted of finding five images of people with different amounts and kinds of body tattoos and also finding three images of different kinds of facial rings and studs. Next I selected three people from my grandparent’s generation and three people from my own generation and asked them to describe the person in the image then I asked them if they would ever consider getting the piercing or tattoo done themselves. I tried my hardest to choose people from as diverse of backgrounds as possible, examples of the people that I chose from my grandparents generation would be a very Christian stay at home farmers wife, another person in my grandparents generation that I chose is a veteran from the Korean war who has been a farmer since. The last person that I chose from my grandparents generation was a widowed woman who lives by herself and from what I understand was a bit of a trouble maker when she was young. I tried to get people from my generation who has very diverse backgrounds also. The first person that I chose is a boy my age that is in college for the experience and hasn’t applied himself to be better. Another type of person that I chose is a hard working girl who comes from a very stable home with hard working parents and follows her morals as much as possible. The last person in my generation that I chose to take my survey was someone who decided to not go to college and he now works for his father doing construction in the town where we grew up. I called and set up a time for all of the people that I interviewed and asked them where they would like to meet, they all requested to have the interview in their home and it took place in their living rooms, I wanted them to feel as comfortable as possible while doing the interview because I wanted an honest answer and didn’t want them to be persuaded or feel pressure of any kind from outside sources. I learned many things about deviance from doing this project. I learned that older people don’t have a lot of respect for people who do things to their bodies like get outrageous tattoos

and piercings. Another thing that I learned is that people stereotype other people just by looking at them, like think that someone is trying to be a punk by getting a tattoo or piercing or that they are trying to get attention or stand out. I also learned that many people are turned off by behavior like this; they feel insecure by tattoos or piercings all over someone else’s face. In class we learned that behavior like this goes against societies norms. Many societies handle this by doing things like ignoring behavior like this or punishing it. An explanations for deviance from the functionalist theory is rebellion. Our book goes on to tell us that when people are committing an act of rebellion they reject the goals and means of society and replaces them with new goals and means. According to
