Allen Office: R3-226B Phone: 392-3366 email: [email protected] General Concepts in Lipid Catabolism Fatty acids in triglycerides (TG) are the major source of energy in the body. TG are stored in adipocytes or are found in dietary fat. 40% of daily energy requirement of people in industrial countries is met with TG. The main tissues using fatty acids as energy source are liver, heart and resting skeletal muscle Excess dietary carbohydrate is converted into TG Lipid Catabolism Triglyceride Fatty acids + Glycerol Glycolysis Sat Unsat Odd Glucose ACETYL CoA Propionyl CoA Succinyl CoA TCA HMG CoA Ketone Bodies CO 2 Hormone Sensitive Lipase Hydrolyzes triglycerides to glycerol and free fatty acids Provides mechanism of liberating stored fatty acids so they can be distributed to other tissues. Hormonally regulated (epinephrine and glucagon) Regulation of Hormone Sensitive Lipase Fatty Acid Oxidation Fatty acids enter cell. They are converted to fatty acyl CoAs in the cytosol. Then fatty acids are transferred into the mitochondrion via carnitine using carnitine acyl transferases at the mitochondrial membrane.
