Will Cliff 12/9/09 WAC 11 Yoga My Yoga Experience Coming to UCLA this past September, I had no clue what to expect from the WAC 11 Asana Yoga class . I had never before done yoga, and having always been an athlete playing sports I really didn’t know what to think of it . Wendy Temple, our WAC counselor, first threw the idea of taking yoga upon me when she saw the overwhelmed look upon my face at orientation . Immediately I leaned towards, “no, there is no way I’m going to take a yoga class, that’s a Marin County moms thing,” but after thinking about it for a second I thought to myself, “why the heck shouldn’t I take a yoga class?” I looked up and said, “yeah, lets do it . I really didn’t see any negative that could come out of it— it would relieve stress, help me get adjusted to a new life in southern California, and, of course, be a source of exercise . Yoga class turned out to not only serve just these purposes, but also many more and as it helped me through this first quarter here at UCLA . Perhaps one of the greater effects yoga took on me was it decreased my anxiety . My anxiety is not incredibly severe, but it is definitely present and my family has a history with it . Adjusting to a new life surrounded by new people I knew some anxiety would come with the new situation . Coming into the class, I knew it could have a positive effect on my anxiety, but I had now clue what a strong positive effect it would be . My anxiety, which normally would have been quite high in such an unfamiliar place, was absolutely minimal to say the least .
