A chemical substance that alters perceptions and mood (affects consciousness.) b. Not always addictive, but some are. 2. Continued use of a psychoactive drug produces tolerance. a. With repeated exposure to a drug, the drug’s effect lessens. Thus it takes greater quantities to get the desired effect. 3. Two forms of substance disorders a. Abuse i. Repeat illegal problems b. Dependence i. Seven symptoms: 1. Tolerance and withdraw. ii. Need at least 3 symptoms to meet dependence criteria. 4. Withdrawal: a. Upon stopping use of a drug (after addiction), users may experience the undesirable effects of withdrawal. b. Different for each drug. c. Behavioral and physical effects are the opposite of doing the drug 5. Dependence: a. Absense of a drug may lead to a feeling a physical pain, intense cravings (physical dependence), and negative emotions (psychological dependence.) 6. Misconceptions About addiction:
