Essays will focus on Narrative, Description, Cause and Effect, Compare and Contrast, and Argument, and engage students not only with their own thoughts and those of classmates, but with the research and work of scholars that interest them and the proper use and citation of source material. REQUIRED TEXT: Readings on Blackboard PREREQUISITES: None COURSE COMPONENTS/GRADING SCALE 5 essays (5-7 pages/15 points each) * 75 90 + A Attendance/ Participation 25 80 + B 70+ C 60 + D Below 60 E 100 pts ( + / - determinations are my discretion) COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course fulfills the .General Education Requirement for Written Discourse. As such, students must pass the course with a C or better, and is meant to increase knowledge of the writing process, particularly the personal essay, to develop critical thinking through writing as we analyze the writing and thoughts of others and ourselves. The course will also include several student workshops, where peers will review and comment on each other’s work. SUBMISSION OF MATERIALS All graded material are to be submitted electronically through Blackboard. Students will receive comments and grades from me electronically on these items, and so should get in the habit of checking the course page regularly. The login page is listed at the top of this page, and the course space contains the course reading, communicate with classmates, and check course grades. SONIE BASIC CONSIDERATIONS: El ATTENDANCE POLICY — Discussion and class participation are keys to the successful completion of this course, and failing to attend class on 5 regular basis will have an impact on your grade. Students who miss more than four (4) class sessions can expect has much as half a letter grade drop per additional day absent unless I (or another university representative) have determined the absence to be legitimate. Students involved with sports or other campus activities that may remove them from class occasionally should see me as soon as possible. :1 CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION - This component of your grade is comprised largely of two things: Your physical presence in the room at each class session and your meaningful engagement with the conversation of the day. Both of these components can easily be ascertained by the frequent use of questions, challenges to my thoughts or the thoughts of others, and the constant belief that what you have to say is worth saying and will contribute in a positive way to the conversation. Cl PLAGIARISM/ACADEMIC INTEGRITY —Basically put, plagiarism refers to the inclusion of other people’s work without the proper citation, thereby passing it off as your own. If plagiarism is discovered, you may receive a failing grade for the course, and further action may be warranted. Ifyou have questions as to what constitutes plagiarism or proper citation techniques, please let me know. Intellectual integrity on the part of all students is basic to individual growth and development through college course work. When academic dishonesty occurs, the teaching/learning climate is seriously undermined and student grth and development are impeded. For these reasons, any form of intellectual dishonesty is a serious concern and is therefore prohibited.
