Introduction Behavioral psychology, or behaviorism, is an idea based on the theory that all behaviors are brought on through conditioning. Classical conditioning is the study of stimulus and response theory originally developed by the Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov. Operant conditioning is the understanding of gender-role expectations to children from adults and peers but is also somewhat like observational conditioning, which comes by watching what others do and emulating those actions. As a result of studies by psychologists, such as John B. Watson and B.F. Skinner, behavioral theories dominated psychological observation and study during the early half of the twentieth century. Behavioral techniques are still used in modern day therapy settings to help troubled clients gain an understanding of new skills and behaviors. Compare and Contrast Behavioral theorists assume that even if a person is not born to be a leader, he or she can learn to become one. In other words, a child who may tend to be introverted or shy can be taught over time to be more confident and independent in order to help him or her in social situations. This kind of teaching or training can be done by complimenting the child’s accomplishments and encouraging the child to learn and experience new and different social events. Play dates, slumber parties, and participating in sports are just a few ways a parent or adult can encourage healthy social interaction. Social learning theory is based on the idea that people can learn through observation. Most skills are not born to a person, but must be taught.
