Lab 2: Newton and Vectors 1. In the lab you saw that you could have the object at equilibrium with 2, 3 and 4 forces. Is it possible to have equilibrium (similar to this lab) with only one force with a non-zero magnitude? No, there would have to be a balance. Can you have a scale with a weight on one side and not the other? Refer to Newton's third law as well. 2. Why did we do the two string experiment? That is, what did our measurements from that experiment tell us about the other two experiments? We did it to find the uncertainty , which told us how friction in the other experiments. 3. If we could eliminate all friction in this experiment it would be harder to keep the system in equilibrium? Explain briefly. Friction gives the experiment more resistance to the weights moving even if the weights are not in balance at the time. 4.
