Can we control our emotions? we can learn to control our emotional respnoses Salovey and Mayer (1990) emotional intelligence (the ability to understand and control emotions) Salovey and Grewal (2005) perceiving emotions ability to detect and decipher emotions in yourself and others using emotions ability to harness one's emotions in the service of thinking and problem-solving understanding emotions ability to comprehend the complex relationships among emotions, similar to theory of mind managing emotions the ability to regulate your own emotions and influence the emotions of others individuals who are high in emotional intelligence are able to not only pick up on others and their own emotions, but they can manage figurative feelings and prevent themselves from inappropriately expressing an emotion Emotional intelligence suggested to be an artifact of introversion/extroversion extroverts are more likely to interact socially and therefore gain experience in emotion having too much or too little emotional control can be a bad thing too little emotional control go through extreme changes in temperament too much emotional control become cold and robotic emotional intelligence can also be used as a tool for deception we interpret someone else's emotional state in order to provide us with information we generally assume it accurately reflects need to make repeated observations of someone's behaviors over time, but these cues
