The Scientific American article “Making Memories Stick” by R. Douglas Fields focuses on the formation of memories. More specifically, the differences between short and long term memories and how they are each formed. Fields starts off by posing a number of questions to the reader, only to answer them later in the article. Unfortunately, what starts off as a seemingly interesting and insightful read quickly turns into a bore. In his deep analysis of the topic on-hand, Fields gives a very detailed description of how memories are made through neurons, synapses, genes, and the like. According to Fields, memories begin with a stimulation of the cell membrane. As the shocks reach the cellular axons and dendrites, a synapse becomes strengthened, which is ultimately what creates long-term memories. Next, as the cell fires an action potential, voltage-sensitive calcium channels open.
