John Malloy Persuasive Speech Outline Fundamentals of Speech Per. 12 November 25, 2008 Topic: Teen Gender Differences General Purpose: To Persuade Specific Purpose: To persuade the audience that male teens out-perform female teens through the schooling years. Central Idea: Male teens out-perform female teens through high school and college, in many areas ranging from academics to athletics to communication. Attention Getter: Who is the first person that comes to mind when I ask you the following questions? Who is the fastest person alive? Who is the strongest person alive? Who is the smartest person alive? Who is the most renowned author alive? Chances are, most of your answers here were men; ranging from Stephen Hawking to Stephen King. This is no coincidence. I. There are fundamental differences between men and women from birth. A. Differences start at adolescence and are already pronounced. 1. Baby boys score higher in use of shapes and 3D visualization. (fact) 2. Baby girls score higher in language ability, face recognition, and fine motor skills. (fact) 3. Boys are twice as likely to be diagnosed with learning disabilities. (statistic) B. The female body physically develops before the male body. 1. Girls reach sexual maturity about two years before boys. (fact) 2. The part of the brain that organizes complex thoughts, controls impulses, and brings foresight develops 1.5 years earlier in girls. (fact) C. There is a huge difference in mental and emotional growth. 1. About 40% of boys grow up without their biological dads, which results in no same-sex adult figure from which to learn. (statistic)
