John Malloy BMZ115EK – Research Proposal Tzvia Cuperman December 6, 2010 In Lab 5, “Fungi in Culture,” our group tested and compared the growth rates of Aspergillis flavus and Aspergillis niger . We used cotton Q-tips to place samples of the A. flavus and A. niger onto potato dextrose agar plates. A sample of each was grown on independent plates, and then one plate contained a sample of both strains. We then let these cultures grow for five days and calculated the area and growth rate of each. This allowed us to observe which strain out competed the other when they were grown independently, and together: the A. flavus ended up significantly outgrowing the A. niger in both environments. These results weren't too surprising, considering the sample plates we were given to look at before we made our hypothesis. This got me thinking, though, about how different environments could affect the growth of the cultures. I began to think about the different environments in which A. flavus and
