Holocene - the epoch we are currently living in. A Greek word meaning "wholly recent" Pleistocene - Characterized by climatic fluctuations, glaciations and the appearance of Hominids. Greek for "most recent" Pliocene - Also characterized by climatic fluctuations, glaciations and Hominid fossil remains. Greek for "more recent" Miocene - Appearance of modern type primates. The climate of this time was cooler and drier with grasslands dominating the middle latitutdes. Also characterized by a radiation of grazing animals. Greek for "less recent" Recent Geologic Ages

Australopithecus afarensis Along the tree covered savannas of East Africa (3.7 to 2.8 million years ago), lived the oldest, and one of the more gracile, of the four known Australopithecine species, Australopithecus afarensis . The best fossil example of this population is named Lucy who was discovered by Taieb and Johanson at Hadar, Ethiopia.
