Essentialism intrinsic to the thing itself (not merely ascribed or added on after the fact), defining (shared by all things of this type), causative (the hidden spring motivating outward behavior), and unchanging (remaining the same despite changes in outward appearance).

Racism, sexism, heterosexism, classism, and other prejudices are frequently diagnosed as forms of essentialism persons can be divided into distinct types with importantly different, unchanging traits these traits fatally determine the character and behavior of the person, and therefore these types have important moral consequences (e.g., certain types are innately inferior or superior to others, cannot “mix,” are innately good or evil, must occupy a certain place in the social order, etc.)
