Mark Hansen, Fall 2009 Assignment 3 Due 9/22/2009 9:10 AM 1. Problem 3.5 in Ross. 2. Problem 3.12 in Ross. 3. The direction that container ships take through a given (plan) area over the Pacific is always between due North ( g = 90° ) and due West ( g = 180° ). Their speeds can be any value between 9 and 25 knots. a. Draw the sample space for the ships’ speeds and directions. b. Identify the following events within the sample space in (a). i. G ± = (10 ≤ ² < 20 ³´ℎ) ; ii. G µ = (g < 120°) ; iii. G = ( ² > 23 ³´ℎ) ; iv. G ± · , and v. G · . c. Make new drawings to show the following: i. G ± ∪ G µ ; ii. G µ ∩ G , and iii. G ± ∩ G µ ∩ G . Among G ± , G µ , and G , which pairs of events are mutually exclusive? 4. A cantilever beam is designed to hold loads at its midpoint and end. Loads W a , or W b , or both can be applied at the midpoint or at the end. The bending moment at the fixed end, M 1 , depends on the loading pattern. Two loads can be placed at one point at the same time.
