50 | P a g e 4 / 3 1 / 2 0 0 9 OBAMA KILLS BUSH'S ANTI- ENVIRONMENTAL RULES By Yael T. Abouhalkah, Kansas City Star Editorial Page columnist Years of anti-environmental rules approved by the Bush administration are being wiped out by President Barack Obama. And that's a good thing. In recent days, Obama has shown he's going to do more to protect the environment than Bush did in his eight years in office. For example: -- On Tuesday the administration said it's going to require independent scientific reviews of federal projects if they might affect threatened or endangered species of animals or plants. -- In another welcome move, Obama officials want to stop allowing mountaintop mining waste to be dumped near streams. -- The Environmental Protection Agency recently said it's looking at dumping three Bush-era rules on emissions from coal-fired power plants. The new administration wants to get more restrictive in reporting of these emissions. Obama and his environmental executives have plenty of work to do in the months ahead.
