Nomenclature Class – proteins with similar function Family – proteins with similar fold (we assume fold is similar if sequences are related) Homologues – proteins related by sequence (identity and similarity) Ortholog – members of a protein family within different species Paralogs – members of a family within one species Paralogs are related by gene duplication events Tolerance for change in sequence greater when two genes are present, one can maintain function and the other can be transformed with no deleterious effect
