9/22/10 2 Mesoderm Induction and Patterning in the Chick • Most mesoderm induction occurs at the primitive streak • Vg-1 (TGF- β ) is involved in primitive streak formation and therefore mesoderm induction as well – Vg-1 secreting cells can induce a new streak • Isolated epiblast can form mesoderm but not dorsal mesoderm structures – Dorsal mesodermal structures, however, can be induced in epiblast by activin (TGF- β ) Additional Mesodermal Factors Brachyury is an early mesodermal markers in vertebrates – Essential for the development of the posterior mesoderm (homozygous lethal mutations) – Semi-dominant short tail mutations) Goosecoid localizes to the organizer and can mimic organizer function
