EQUIPMENTS A. Power Supplies: 1. Isolation Transformer 2. Variable-voltage autotransformer (Variac of equivalent) B. Instruments: 1. EVM or DMM C. Resistors: 1. 1 pc. 4700- , ½-W, 5% D. Capacitors: 1. 1 pc. 0.5 μF E . Inductor: 1. 1pc. Large iron-core choke, 8 or 9 H F. Miscellaneous 1. SPST switch 2. Polarized line cord with on-off switch and fuse III. PROCEDURE
1. With the line cord unplugged, line switch off , and S 1 open , connect the circuit. Set the autotransformer to its lowest output voltage. 2. Plug in the line cord; line switch on ; close S 1 . Increase the output voltage of the autotransformer until V AB = 10 V rms. Maintain this voltage throughout the experiment. Check it from time to time and adjust if necessary. 3. Measure the voltage across the resistor V R and the inductor , V L . Record the values in the table provided for the RL circuit. Open S 1 . 4. Calculate the current in the circuit using the measured value of V R and the rated value of R . Record your answer in the table for RL circuit. 5. using the calculated value of I and the measured value of V L , calculate X L . Record your answer in the “ RL” row of the table. 6. Calculate the total impedance of the circuit by two methods: Ohm’s law (using the calculated value of I and the applied voltage V AB ) and the square-root formula (using R and X L ). Record your answers in the “ RL ” row of the table. 7. With S 1 open , add a 0.5µF capacitor in series with the resistor and choke as in the circuit diagram. 8. Close S 1 . Check to see that V AB = 10 V. Measure the voltage across the resistor V R , the choke V L , and the capacitor V C . Record the values in the “ RLC ” row of table. After taking all measurements, open S 1 .
