Foundations of Chemistry; Applying POGIL Principles , 4 th edition, Pacific Crest, ISBN: 978-1-60263-504-3 (RECITATION) LEARNING OBJECTIVES: The goal of recitation is to use group/team work and peer discussion to improve your problem-solving skills, as this will lead you to an enhanced comprehension of basic chemical principles. The recitation exercises you will do are intended to help you develop the analytical skills needed to engage in successful problem solving. Students who do well in recitation will be able to: 1) Gain hands-on experience in applying concepts learned in class to solving actual problems 2) Learn methods of balancing equations of all types 3) Learn strategies for solving the various types of calculations and worked problems encountered in general chemistry 4) Learn how structure of molecules effect their reactivity 5) Organize information, identify the important ideas, resolve conflicting data, and use inductive and deductive skills in problem solving. COURSE GRADING: Your recitation grade is worth 10% of your overall CHE 1110 course grade. 50% of your recitation grade will be based on your teams Strategy Analyst Report (see next page) which incorporates homework, attendance, and participation. There is a penalty for arriving late. Your lowest attendance/strategy analyst report grade will be dropped. If you miss a recitation this will be your dropped attendance/strategy analyst report grade. 50% of your recitation grade will be the average of your best 11 out of 13 quizzes. If you miss a quiz, this will be your dropped quiz grade. Some of the quizzes will be individual and some will be team quizzes. While team quizzes are graded individually, the score you get will depend on other members in your team.
