AP chemistry lab Stuyvesant High School 2010-2011 Adapted from “Experimental Chemistry”, 7 th ed. James F. Hall. © S. O’Malley, 2010 LAB 18 Alchemy (not really) In today’s lab we will conduct several redox reactions to simulate an old-fashioned alchemy demonstration! By creating a mixture of zinc and hydroxide ions, we can create a solution of zincate complex ion. Zn(s) + 2OH - (aq) ZnO 2 2- (aq) + H 2 (g) or Zn(s) + 2OH - (aq) + 2H 2 O(l) Zn(OH) 4 2- (aq) + 3H 2 (g) Adding a penny to the solution above provides a site for reduction of zinc to plate the penny with a zinc coating. Zn 2+ (aq) + 2e - Zn(s) Heating a zinc-plated penny in a burner flame forms an alloy of copper and zinc to create brass.
