Thesis Statement Credit cards are the reason why Americans have so much debt most Americans should not use credit cards because there is no positive side to using credit cards. Credit cards are the leading reason for debt in America. The average family in America today carries $8,000 in credit card debit according to the American Bankers’ Association . CardWeb.com statistics show that the average debt per American household with at least one credit card was $8,940 in 2002, the last year for which figures are available” (Weston, 2010, The Truth about credit card debt, para.5) . Even though credit card debt is at a world high people are still purchasing credit cards, study show that 1 out of 7 Americans carries 10 credit cards or more. “Credit bureau analyses of consumer payment data show that financially squeezed borrowers have begun paying their credit card and car bills before their mortgages” (Chu, 2008, More Americans using credit cards to stay afloat, para.3).
