IT 205 Management of Information Systems Appendix C Assignment: How Computers Work Purpose of Assignment The readings for Week 1 covered the major types of computer software used in business. This assignment tests your understanding of how computers and software work by outlining different types of computer software and their purpose. This knowledge is vital to success in many career paths. Resource: Essentials of Management Information Systems, Chapter 4 IT Infrastructure: Hardware and Software section 4.1 Computer Hardware section 4.2 Computer Software Instructions: Answer the essay questions as if you are explaining and teaching the information presented in sections 4.1 and 4.2 of Chapter 4 to a person who is new to using computers. State your major points clearly and organize them logically. Support your points with specific details, examples, or analysis. Your explanations need to be comprehensive, accurate, and persuasive. Paragraph transitions need to be logical, and sentences clear and concise. Link theory to relevant examples of current experience and industry practice, and use the vocabulary of the theory correctly. Quotations (more than two words) taken from the textbook or elsewhere must be put within quotation marks and your source cited, e.g. (Laudon and Laudon, 2009). Each essay answer is worth 20 points and must be 300 to 500 words in length. 1

IT 205 Management of Information Systems 1. Explain what “hardware” means, and give a general overview of how computers are used by individuals and businesses. (20 point essay, 300 to 500 words) 2 Hardware is a general term that refers to the physical artifacts of a technology. It may also mean the physical components of a computer system, in the form of computer hardware. Computer hardware refers to the physical parts of a computer and related devices. “Computer hardware is the physical equipment used for input, processing, and output activities in an information system” ( hardware ). Computer hardware consists of the following: computers of various sizes and shapes; various input, output, and storage devices; and telecommunications devices that link computers together. Hardware can consists of many different components from large mainframes, servers, midrange computers, desktop and laptop computers, handheld personal digital assistants (PDAs), and mobile devices for accessing corporate data and the Internet. Computer hardware also includes equipment for gathering and inputting data, physical media for storing the data, and devices for delivering the processed information as output. Internal hardware devices include motherboards, hard drives, and RAM. External hardware devices include monitors, keyboards, mice, printers, and scanners.
