IT 205 Management of Information Systems Appendix D Assignment: Telecommunication Tools at Dirt Bikes USA Purpose of Assignment This assignment tests your understanding of business applications of internet and wireless technologies by discussing their benefits and drawbacks. Resource: Chapter 6 in our textbook, Essentials of Management Information Systems Scenario: Dirt Bikes USA has networked the office desktop computers and provided Internet access to the office employees. Dirt Bikes’ management has identified these communication and information gaps: Employees aren’t getting the information they need to do their jobs, both in the office and out in the field, in a cost-effective and timely manner. People outside the company, such as vendors, customers, distributors, and other business partners, aren’t getting the access and information they expect quickly and easily. Management is lagging in obtaining information about developments in the motorcycle industry and the global economy. Management wants to close these gaps in order to continue to be competitive both domestically and internationally. They want to leverage telecommunications technology to do this, but they need more information to make a wise decision on the direction to take. They are looking to you to give them a better understanding about the pros and cons of the available software and hardware. Instructions: Answer the questions as if you are a consultant providing recommendations to management on various telecommunications tools. Management wants to hear about the benefits, but they also need to know the drawbacks in terms of productivity, security, and cost. State your major points clearly and organize them logically. Support your points with specific details, examples, or analysis. Your explanations need to be comprehensive, accurate, and persuasive. Paragraph transitions need to be logical, and sentences clear and concise. Link theory to relevant examples of current experience and industry practice, and use the vocabulary of the theory correctly. Quotations (more than two words) taken from the textbook or elsewhere must be put within quotation marks and your source cited, e.g. (Laudon and Laudon, 2009). There are 10 questions. Each answer is worth 8 points and must be between 100 to 150 words in length. 1
