Unformatted text preview: CDE 232 – Spring 2011 Exam 1 Study Guide Dr. Reesing This study guide is being provided with the assumption that you have completed all of the assigned readings/lectures. Remember, the exam will be available online for you to take through the “Exams” button on Blackboard from 6:00am on Wednesday Feb 16 th until Noon on Thursday Feb 17 th (MST). You will need to have Respondus LockDown Browser installed on your computer and use it to access the exam (see syllabus or Exam button for more information). The exam will have 50 questions based on your assigned readings in the Santrock textbook (Ch 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6) and the associated Lectures and Videos. Each question will be worth 2 points, for a total possible of 100 points for this exam. You will have 70 minutes to complete the exam. Please stay within the time limit as 2pts will be deducted for each 1 minute you go over. Detailed exam instructions are posted under the “Exams” button on Blackboard. Good luck with your studying! I hope you all do well on the exam! Know/understand the following: Introduction to Life-Span Development (Chapter 1 and Lecture) • Understand what the science of human development is. The science of human development seeks to understand how and why people change or remain the same over time. • Be able to identify the different ways children were viewed historically and how that might have influenced parenting strategies—original sin, tabula rasa, innate goodness • Original Sin- children were perceived as being basically bad, born into the world as evil beings . • Tabula Rasa- children are like a “blank tablet,” and acquire their characteristics through experience . • Innate Goodness - children are inherently good . Identify the difference between the traditional approach to development and the life-span approach to development The traditional approach emphasizes extensive change from birth to adolescence, little or no change in adulthood, and decline in late old age. The life span approach emphasizes developmental change across the life span (from conception to death) recognizing that development continues to occur throughout adulthood. What are the main characteristics of the study of human development from a life span perspective? o Distinguish between normative age-graded influences, normative history-graded influences, & nonnormative life events o Normative age-graded influences = biological and environmental influences that are similar for individuals in a particular age group (puberty, menopause, entry into school, retirement). o Normative history-graded influences = common to people of a particular generation or cohort because of the historical circumstances they experience (Great Depression of the 1930’s; Wars; technology advances; Sept 11 th ) o Non-normative life events = unusual occurrences that have a major impact on the individual’s life and usually are not applicable to many people (can be positive or negative) (winning the lottery; death of a parent when a child is young...
