HIST102 Gatling Gun Zachary Senter In the years of 1860-1890, America was growing at a rate faster than ever expected. New technology and modes of travel made life easier and allowed work to be done faster. The 1860’s alone changed the fabric of American history with things like the cinemascope, which showed that real motion films would one day be possible. Next was the rotating printing press created by William Bullock. This machine allowed paper to be fed in on a continuous roll and be printed on both sides at once, it became the American standard and allowed the printing of news to be done faster creating a more streamlined informational feed to the people. Another monumental invention pertaining to travel was the steam powered velocipede and then later the gas-powered motorcycle. With all these great things being invented and new forms of travel allowing the ability to go great distances in shorter time, one would think things were going well in America, but in fact they were on the cusp of a war with themselves. With war came gun fighting, and one invention of this era changed warfare forever, the Gatling Gun. While necessity may be the mother of invention, war is most definitely a close relative. Throughout history we have seen war create the need for leap and bounds in innovation in order to out fight the opposing side using things against them they had never seen and could not defend. It gave people even more of an incentive to create something better than the current, something that could be used to defend their country and save their way of life. Also, with a
