Unformatted text preview: GRA 111 Fall 2010 Ch. 14: Pictorial Modernism I nt roduction 1920 European poster design influence of modern art movements (remember Ch. 13?) pictorial references were useful for communicating with the general public this dialogue between communicate imagery and design forms generated the excitement and energy of pictorial graphics influenced by modern art the Beggarstaffs James Pryde William Nicholson brothers-in-law friends since art school painters opened an advertising design studio in 1894 used a pseudonym to protect their reputations as artists new technique: collage cut pieces of paper pasted onto board the resulting style of absolutely flat planes of color had sensitive edges drawn with scissors incomplete images encouraged viewers to participate to decipher the images 1 Dudley Hardy introduced pictorial qualities of F rnech posters to London billboards during the 1890s his poster for the Gaiety Girl provided Londoners with a media icon akin to Parisians Chrette Plakastil the reductive, flat-color design school that emerged in Germany in the 20th century (meaning: poster style) Lucian Bernhard ran away from home after being punished by his father for repainting all the decoration in the family home (influenced by a colorful interior decoration exhibit in Munich) got his start in poster design when he won a contest sponsored by Priester matches (although the jurors initial reaction was less than favorable) he had moved graphic communications one step further in the simplification and reduction of naturalism into a visual language of shape and sign flat color shapes product name product image over two decades, he designed more than 300 packages for 66 products the Berthold Type Foundry in Berlin developed a typeface based on Bernhards sans- serif style of painted lettering his elegantly simple style leant itself to trademark design Hommel Micrometers Manoli cigarettes his reductive style anticipated constructivism moved to America, but his work was not readily accepted it took him five years to establish himself as a graphic designer designed type and worked as an interior designer Hollerbaum and Schmidt printing firm signed exclusive contracts with Bernhard and five other artists ensured that clients would have to work through their firm to commission work by these highly regarded artists Switzerland and the Sach plakat poster design was influenced by German, French, and I talian cultures travel posters were appropriate for this popular vacation spot 2 traditional lithographic crafts were retained in what was known as Basel Realism poster for the PKZ department store consists of a life-size drawing of a coat showing the actual hairs of the fabric with the text restricted to PKZ...
